Campaigners in legal challenge to decision by council to demolish theatre

Campaigners have launched legal action against Scarborough Borough Council over its decision to demolish the town’s Futurist Theatre.

The Save The Futurist group wants a judicial review of the council’s decisions of 9 and 17 January.

On its Facebook page, the group said: “We are incredibly fortunate to have a leading firm of solicitors, Squire Patton Boggs LLP of Leeds working on this action for us together with a leading London public law QC. They have worked tirelessly, over and above all expectation on our behalf.

“This action is costly but has had to be taken in an attempt to stop demolition of The Futurist Theatre. The legal fight has only just begun.”

The group said it would need financial support to continue the action and ‎maximise the chance of changing the mind of the council.

“There is now a concrete focus to rally around and this is the best chance that our local, national and international supporters have to do something real and practical to save the Futurist. A little bit of money given by a lot of members of the worldwide Futurist family is what we need,” it said.

The Save The Futurist group added that it was required to become a legal entity and was now Save The Futurist Theatre (Scarborough) Ltd.

A spokeswoman for Scarborough Borough Council said: "We are aware that Save The Futurist Theatre (Scarborough) LImited has started legal proceedings against the council. It would not be appropriate for the council to comment further at this time."
