High Court rejects appeal by nightclub operator over revocation of licence

A High Court judge has rejected an appeal against the operator of a nightclub over the revocation of its licence.

Sahara Promotions, which operated the Pier One Club in Canning Town, had its licence revoked by a District Judge at Thames Magistrates Court in November 2023.

This came after Newham Council and Metropolitan Police raised concerns about the safety of women at the venue.

The case brought against the club included a claim that a lack of care from staff may have contributed to two rapes that allegedly took place within months of each other.

Pier One appealed the District Judge's decision, but this was rejected.

An appeal by the landlord was allowed subject to "stringent conditions".

Newham said this means that, in order for the landlord to be considered for a licence in future, it will have to apply for a variation and appoint a new operator.

Cllr Amar Virdee, Cabinet Member for Housing Needs, Homelessness and Private Rented Sector, and Community Safety and Crime, said: "Venues like pubs and clubs have a clear duty to prevent crime and disorder and act as guardians to customers who may be vulnerable as a result of drinking alcohol.

"Established procedures and training of staff are essential to combat a national epidemic of violence against women and girls."

Cllr Virdee added: "This successful action in the courts shows that in Newham, we will take vigorous action against those who fail in their obligation to keep customers safe.

Pier One has been approached for comment.
