Council apologises after mistakenly listing resident as owner of two properties

Leicester City Council has apologised to a resident who it mistakenly listed as having bought two council houses under Right to Buy.

Abdul Kadva legitimately bought his council house in 2006 but was wrongly shown as also owning the adjoining house.

The error came to light in 2013 when he wanted to re-mortgage his home to expand his printing firm.

Mr Kadva has said the premises he wanted to buy would have cost £150,000, but this had risen to £500,000 in the five years that the error has remained unresolved.

A council spokesperson said: “We have been seeking to resolve this situation since it was raised with us last year.

“The transfer of the next door property was due to a conveyancing error during the sale of Mr Kavda’s home under the Right to Buy scheme. This was not picked up by either party’s solicitors or the Land Registry.”

The next door property is in fact still owned by the council.

Leicester’s statement went on: “We have now agreed terms to have the property transferred back to us, legal papers have been drafted and we’re making every effort to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.

“In the meantime, we are very sorry for the delays and inconvenience caused.”
