Nplaw helps Welsh council secure CPO for Grade II* listed hospital complex

Public sector legal practice nplaw has helped Denbighshire County Council obtain a compulsory purchase order for Denbigh Hospital, a Grade II* listed complex of buildings set in over 20 hectares of parkland.

The Welsh Government last week confirmed the CPO for the hospital, which was once known as North Wales Hospital and is seen as one of the most sophisticated examples in Britain of a pioneering, early Victorian asylum.

The CPO was supported by the Princes Regeneration Trust and the North Wales Building Preservation Trust. It was considered at a three-week long public inquiry earlier this year.

Nplaw carried out the legal work on behalf of Denbighshire. Chris Skinner, who heads nplaw’s CPO Consultancy Service, said: “I have been working on this project with Denbighshire County Council for several years and it is really satisfying to have achieved our objective of a confirmed CPO. It is great to be involved with a project which will see the transformation of what is currently a sorry looking site.”

Cllr David Smith, Cabinet Lead Member for Environment for Denbighshire, said: “The Minister’s decision totally vindicates the great efforts made by the council and its partners to protect this important historic site for future generations.”
