Chancery Lane calls for “more comprehensive review” of different development corporations

The Law Society has called for a more comprehensive review of the roles and functions of the different development corporations, “so that there is clarity as to what they are expected to deliver on and what relationship they have with the local planning authority”.

Chancery Lane said the need to future proof any development corporation meant that local political realities should be reflected and parity of powers between planning authorities and adequate funding needed to be put in place.

“We recommend that academic research into the success or failure of development corporations inform any future developments,” it added.

The Law Society’s comments came in response to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Consultation on Development Corporation Reform, which closed on 18 January.

The technical consultation invited ideas on whether and how legislative reforms might ensure that, in future, where it is appropriate for a development corporation to be used, a fit-for-purpose model exists.
