Campaigners crowd fund for legal challenge over Liverpool zip wire

Campaigners are seeking to crowd fund a judicial review challenge over the decision of the planning committee at Liverpool City Council to approve the creation of an adventure zip wire in the city centre.

Plans put forward by Zip World for the zip wire from St John's Beacon to Liverpool Central Library were approved by the committee by 5 votes to 3 on 30 June 2020.

Campaign group Stop the Liverpool Zip has so far raised £2,230 via Go Fund Me towards its target of £5,000 to fund the primary stage of the legal challenge.

The group said the plans to install permanent adventure zip wires would destroy not only [the city’s] UNESCO recognition but the oasis of calm and remembrance in the city centre’s St John's Gardens.

Claiming the plans were "Disneyfication", it added: “We are asking Liverpool City Council to stop this project and maintain the integrity of the historical offer of our city.”
