Law firms seal merger in boost to public sector practice

Weightmans and Mace & Jones are to merge on 1 May 2011 in a deal that could significantly bolster the combined firm’s position in the public sector market.

The tie-up will deliver a combined fee income of more than £75m. Weightmans will also employ more than 1,000 people, with over 770 in the North West alone.

Weightmans managing partner Patrick Gaul said: “As the talks with Mace & Jones have progressed it has become increasingly clear that our two firms are very well matched.

“We have similar cultures and values and a shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards in our dealings with our people and clients. The merged firm will be a major national player with strength in depth across every area of its practice.”

Gaul added that the merger would provide new opportunities for the firm to expand its services, and provide greater resources and expertise.

Richard Corran of Mace & Jones suggested that Weightmans’ national reach would give his colleagues the chance to tap into new markets in London and the Midlands, and offer existing clients a wider range of services.

Weightmans has already agreed to acquire the insurance practice of Vizards Wyeth, in a deal which will complete on 1 April 2011.
