Health and safety watchdog to prosecute council over death of man hit by tree in park

Cheshire East Council faces prosecution by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) after a man was killed by a falling tree in one of its parks.

Christopher Hall was fatally injured by the lime tree while walking his cocker spaniel in a park in Wilmslow, in August 2020.

HSE prosecutions have started against both the council and its wholly owned contractor ANSA Environmental Services.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: “The council has been notified…that HSE prosecutions are being brought against Cheshire East Council and its wholly-owned company, Ansa Environmental Services Ltd.

“This follows an investigation into an incident at the Carrs, Wilmslow, on 28 August 2020, which resulted in the tragic death of Mr Christopher Hall.

“As the legal process continues, our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with Mr Hall’s family. As this matter is subject to legal proceedings, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

The HSE did not respond to a request for comment.
