Protocol issued for legal professionals to raise concerns informally about coroner behaviour

The protocol is equivalent to one issued earlier this month by the Lady Chief Justice and the Senior President of Tribunals in relation to the behaviour of judges.

The protocol issued by the Chief Coroner is intended to provide an informal route through which legal professionals may raise concerns about the behaviour of a coroner “where early and constructive resolution is appropriate”.

The Courts and Tribunals Judiciary said: “The protocol does not replace the formal complaints process. More serious concerns or instances where concerns remain after attempting informal resolution should continue to be referred to the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO), which is responsible for formal complaints against judicial office holders.

“The protocol reflects the principles set out in the judiciary’s recently published informal resolution protocol for concerns about judicial behaviour and aims to promote professionalism, respect and confidence within the coroner service.”
