Council-owned London Luton Airport to bring in specialist legal advice for airport expansion

London Luton Airport, which is wholly owned by Luton Borough Council, is to seek specialist legal advice on commercial, construction and planning law in relation to a project which will involve expanding the airport.

The closing date is 9 May 2019. The contract is due to start on 10 June 2019 and run until 10 June 2022.

In February this year the council published the preferred option for the sustainable future growth of what is the UK’s fifth largest and fastest growing major airport.

Using the existing runway, London Luton Aiport is targeting expansion of the airport to 32 million passengers per annum (mppa) from its current cap of 18 mppa.

The preferred option would involve construction of a new second terminal to the north of the runway. To compensate for the partial use of Wigmore Valley Park, new parkland and open space would be provided over a larger area to the east of the existing park.

The proposals are of a scale that require an application to the government for a Development Consent Order (DCO) to authorise the expansion, the council said at the time.
