Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities becomes Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government again

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has been renamed to the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government (MHCLG).

Announcing the name change, Angela Rayner, the ministry's Secretary of State, said: "A Government of public service means fixing the fundamentals to deliver for the British people.

"No more gimmicks and slogans, but the hard yards of governing in the national interest.

"The department I lead will be the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government."

Boris Johnson introduced the name Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in 2021 to reflect his 'levelling up' agenda aimed at spreading opportunity "equally across the UK".

The ministry itself dates back to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), which was initially part of the Cabinet Office in the early 2000s.

It has had a number of different names since then, having first been re-styled under Tony Blair in 2006 as the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

This name remained until 2018 when Theresa May's cabinet reshuffle saw the department renamed the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

Jonhson later changed the name to DLUHC, which has now been replaced by MHCLG.
