The European Union's new AI Act has been approved by the European Parliament and will soon begin to enter into force. The law's impact will extend beyond the EU; like GDPR, the AI Act could become a model for other countries' laws and will impact many non-EU companies operating in Europe. As such, anyone working with or advising on AI needs to understand this important new law.
The AI Act provides a model for identifying AI risks, preventing harms, and governing AI. It will ban some AI uses altogether, impose strict obligations on “high-risk” systems, and require transparency information to be provided on others. Navigating the Act's complex system of obligations, actors, and definitions is daunting. Some organisations in the AI lifecycle face a barrage of assessments, documentation, and controls. Others will need to know what to look for when conducting AI-related due diligence. By understanding the regulatory framework now, you can improve AI governance in your organisation, identify any pending obligations, and develop a strategy to meet them.
By the end of this workshop you will understand the EU AI Act's requirements for different types of actors and the enforcement mechanisms, develop a strategy for aligning your organisation's use of AI with the AI Act, understand the UK's objectives and strategy for AI regulation, know how both frameworks interact with existing laws and frameworks, identify different technical and legal definitions of AI and the risks they present, prepare for the future of AI regulation in the EU and other jurisdictions.
This workshop is suitable for anyone working with AI, or advising on its implications, both in the UK and the EU, including Data Protection Officers and those working in audit, risk and IT.
