It is essential that all public sector investigators comply with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) Interview Codes of Practice when conducting suspect interviews in relation to criminal investigations. Failure to do so could lead to evidence being excluded in court proceedings.

The PACE Codes C & E are constantly being updated. This workshop deals specifically with the sections that apply to the conduct of interviews and treatment of those being interviewed.

Besides ensuring lawfully compliant interview procedures the workshop also provides detailed guidance about how to structure and management an interview, identifying topics and explaining how to frame questions in order to thoroughly explore the relevant issues.

This workshop is suitable for experienced interviewers seeking a refresher, and those with little or no experience. It is delivered by a former law enforcement practitioner, in a relaxed and informal style, who has conducted many interviews and has also worked as a legal representative during such interviews.

• Understand challenges to evidence under Sections 76 and 78 (unfair confessions and unfairly or unlawfully obtained evidence)
• Explain the caution and understand the records required
• Identify records of interviews and other significant statements and how to introduce them
• Apply the required procedures for opening, conducting and closing an interview
• Engage appropriately with solicitors during the pre interview briefing and interview
• Comply with the requirements for vulnerable persons, appropriate adults and interpreters
• Plan and conduct a structured and organised interview
• Introduce evidence such as exhibits and witness statements during an interview
• Manage pre-prepared statements, no comment interviews and other possible scenarios
• Record an interview in compliance with Code E PACE Codes
