District Judge Crichton wins award for outstanding contribution to family law

District Judge Nicholas Crichton was given the Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Family Law Award at Jordan Publishing’s inaugural Family Law Awards this week.

The judge was recognised for his work in setting up the Family Drug and Alcohol Court in London.

The court, which is based at the Inner London Family Proceedings Court and is the first of its kind in the UK, trialled a new approach to care proceedings where parental substance misuse causes harm to children.

An independent report published in May 2011 found that parents who went through the court were more likely to stop their substance misuse than those in ordinary care proceedings. This meant that fewer children were taken into care, the researchers found.
