Getting ready for Hillsborough Law - DWF

Getting ready for Hillsborough Law - DWF

Autumn 2026 will see the Public Office (Accountability) Bill, the "Hillsborough Law", back on the move.

Andy Burnham, the original sponsor of the 2017 Private Members' Bill from which today's legislation flows, has continued to push for its passage as one of his political priorities - and we can expect legislative progress to be swift once Parliament returns from its summer break.

When the Bill receives Royal Assent, many of its provisions come into force immediately, while the work to deliver the Bill's aim of a change in culture in public services will also begin in earnest.

This session covers what organisations should do to prepare now, including:

  • How the Bill will apply to inquiries and inquests already under way, and what you need to do;
  • How the Bill applies to private sector bodies involved in delivering public services, and what public and private sector partners each need to do to prepare;
  • How to assess your existing ethical codes against the Hillsborough Law requirements;

How to ensure your staff and senior officers are aware of and prepared for the Bill's new criminal offences.
