High Court to hear application for judicial review over dementia unit closure

The High Court will next week hear an application for judicial review of the planned closure of a dementia unit in Anglesey.

Law firm Julie Burton Law, acting for the daughter of a 102-year-old resident, obtained an injunction last month in relation to arrangements for the Hafan ward at Sant Tysilio care home in Llanfairpwll.

According to a report in the Daily Post, Anglesey County Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board had said they intended to withdraw around 20 residents from the EMI (elderly, mental and infirm) ward.

A spokeswoman for the Care and Social Services Inspectorate for Wales meanwhile said: “CSSIW continues to work with the local authority and the Betsi Cadwalader University Health Board to monitor the situation at Sant Tysilio. We are currently undertaking an inspection and will publish a report in due course.

“Our previous inspection report, published in March, is available on our website.”

Julie Burton confirmed the legal action but said she would not be making further comment until after the hearing on 8 June.
