LLG fires gun on Deputy Vice President nomination process

Lawyers in Local Government (LLG) is inviting nominations for the role of Deputy Vice President from members who hold full membership.

The LLG Board will consider the nominations at its March 2016 meeting, with a view to recommending the successful candidate to the AGM at Warwick the following month.

The role will commence from April 2016, when Vice President Doreen Forrester-Brown of Southwark becomes President and Deputy Vice President Philip Horsfield of Broxtowe becomes Vice President. The current President is Bev Cullen of Lancashire County Council.

LLG said the DVP role was "a great opportunity for ambitious local government lawyers to:

  • Play in a leading role in a major national professional organisation
  • Shape key services for local government lawyers across the land
  • Help shape the national policy agenda
  • Engage with key national players in top organisations including the Local Government Association, the Law Society and Government Departments
  • Increase your influential network;
  • Give your CV a turbo-boost!"

A role profile can be viewed here.

LLG said the successful nominee would be required to undertake the duties within the profile, which may include covering events and meetings in the evening or at the weekend.

“This workload is likely to increase in the role of Vice President and will significantly increase on taking up the Presidency,” it noted.

“It is therefore important that you ensure your employer is comfortable with you taking on the role and willing to allow you to be flexible in continuing to meet work commitments as well as commitments in the role of not just Deputy Vice President, but also in the roles of Vice President in 2017 and President in 2018.”

The nomination process calls on candidates to set out on no more than two sides of A4 a written application demonstrating with examples where possible, the following:

  • Ability to take an interest in and represent LLG members at all levels;
  • Commitment to LLG;
  • Capacity to represent LLG effectively and with impact at all levels (Stakeholders include e.g. DCLG, LGA, CIPFA, SOLACE, etc);
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills;
  • Personal standing and reputation;
  • Personal achievement.

Applications should be submitted to Ann Harlow by email.
