Maria Memoli elected to top Law Society committee

Maria Memoli is to become a member of the Law Society’s management board, the first time a local government lawyer has been elected to that position.

The management board is a senior committee whose members include the president, vice-president and chief executive. It is one of four boards at Chancery Lane that advise its council on representative matters and carry out various delegated functions.

Memoli is already a member of the Law Society’s Council and also the Association of Council Secretaries and Solicitors’ Council. She holds the ethical governance portfolio for ACSeS.

During her career, Memoli has held a number of roles including Solicitor to the Council at Kennet District Council and Acting Borough Secretary and Solicitor at Slough Borough Council. She currently runs a consultancy, coaching and mentoring organisation, Local Governance.

Maria Memoli said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been elected onto the Law Society’s management board and I am humbled by my fellow council members’ confidence in me. It certainly won’t be an easy ride running the Law Society, but to have a local government perspective at the higher echelons of the Law Society is truly remarkable.’

ACSeS President Philip McCourt said: “ACSeS is delighted that Law Society council members have recognised Maria’s talents and personal qualities in this way. Maria has a strong track record as a doughty advocate for local government lawyers in all contexts and her prestigious appointment is particularly welcome and resonant at a time when ACSeS and Solicitors in Local Government are planning to join together to offer a unified, influential voice for all local government lawyers across England and Wales.”

He added: “I know that local government lawyers can rely on Maria to fight their corner resolutely and continuously in the corridors of Law Society power.”
