Walker Morris wins tender to advise on Norfolk recycling contract

Walker Morris has won a competitive tender to advise eight councils in Norfolk on a joint, multi-million pound recycling contract.

The seven district and borough councils, together with the county council, already work together on an existing contract. However, they are looking to appoint a new provider when this expires at the end of March 2014.

The contract currently covers 60,000 tonnes of materials each year for the eight authorities. The new provider will be contracted to receive, transport, process and then market co-mingled dry recyclable materials.

Nick Baker, Corporate Director at North Norfolk District Council, said: "We hope the contract will become a beacon of best practice in modern recycling. It is not only expected to save millions of pounds for the councils of Norfolk and the communities they serve, but will also deliver major benefits through the promotion and maximising of recycling.”

Walker Morris partner Ben Sheppard said: "The eight councils in Norfolk working partnership is an excellent example of successful collaborative working in the public sector and of the benefits that can be achieved. Joint procurements are becoming increasingly common in local government, driven by the need to achieve cost savings and enter into long term contracts. It is testament to the councils' commercial focus and willingness to work together for a common aim."

The participating councils are:

  • Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk

  • Breckland Council

  • Broadland District Council

  • Great Yarmouth Borough Council

  • Norfolk County Council

  • North Norfolk District Council

  • Norwich City Council

  • South Norfolk Council
